cali was hella off the hook
I had an amazing time in California. First I went to LA for the annual Ink Slam, hosted by Da Poetry Lounge. There was both an individual and team competition and I was able to do both. I was honored to be on a team with some of the illest in the country, Bluz, Q Talley, and Carlos Robson. Team I-85! I came in third place to Queen D and Bluz for the indies, and we came in fourth place overall as a team. Not only was it a dope event, but I got to connect with a lot of west coast poets that I didn’t know prior to Ink Slam. Also met up with a bunch of old friends from the Buddhist community and they were hella deep!
After the Ink Slam, I took a short flight up to the Bay Area on Monday and kicked it with my Oakland folks before Brave New Voices on Wednesday. I was a part of “Future Corps” which is for BNV alumni and basically we helped out with the festival behind the scenes with hosting, coordinating, runnin’ around, etc. It was hella fly to chill with other BNV alumni and the Youth Speaks staff. But before BNV started, there was a competition called the Stimulus Slam in Oakland that I was invited out to. It was hella close but I won! There was a cash prize and a pimp cup that had “POET” on it. SWAG! Big shout outs to ner city for inviting me out and showin’ hella hella hella Oakland love to a small town bull city boy.
